MODULE ONE ANSWERS

---Using Web Browsers

1.)

  1. The web page Google Chrome defaults to when the home button is pressed is simply titled Google, at www.google.com.

  2. This appeared because I have the Google Chrome browser downloaded, and the home button automatically defaults to a new Google Search page.
You change this default setting so that another web page automatically loads when you launch the web browser by entering a different custom web address in Chrome settings.

2.) You can change the appearance of web pages (fonts, text size, etc.) within Google Chrome through the appearance section of Chrome settings.
One may wish to change these settings to increase the accessibility of the webpage, as certain fonts are easier to read for individuals with conditions such
as dyslexia, and bigger font sizes are easier to read for those with vision impairments.

3.) The default search engine associated with Chrome is Google Search, which you can access by pressing the home button, or by opening a new tab.

4b. learning to make web pages (with quotes):

5.) The number of hits is not consistent across search engines due to each one having a unique algorithm for finding and displaying relevant web pages.
Some engines may also show more ads in their results due to more lenient advertising policies. My current default search engine is Google, but I may
use a different engine such as Duck Duck Go if I want a more tailored and specific search without having to sift through over three billion results.

6.) Wolfram Alpha is, by definition, a search engine. It is technically a computational knowledge engine, that only searches through its own resources
for results instead of crawling through web pages on the World Wide Web. However, this does not disqualify it from being a search engine since it still
searches for items in a database to present based on what the user inputs into it.

---Using Metasearch Sites

7.)

  1. The main difference between a metasite and a regular search site is that a metasite compiles results from multiple different search engines into one list.

  2. Dogpile does not provide the number of results found, but there were multiple pages worth.
Each page is organized with sponsored results first, then a handful of real results, then more sponsored results.

  3. I would estimate that 50% of the searches actually relate to learning to make web pages, with all the sponsored posts being mostly irrelevant.

---Finding Multimedia Elements

8.)

  1. To search specifically for multimedia on Google, there is an Images button on the homepage of the search engine.

  2. The specific elements can you search for include images, videos, news, shopping, books, maps, flights, and finance.

  3. I searched for the song El Paso by Marty Robbins and got 1,700,000 matches.

  4. Google provides a warning that Images may be subject to copyright under every image result.
When you click on Learn More you are taken to a Google webpage explaining copyright laws.

9.) Creative Commons is a media-sharing organization where creators can attribute certain licenses to their work that signal to the public that anyone
is allowed to share and use their media (with some limitations depending on which license is used). One might want to use Creative Commons for
images and other media because everything under their licenses is free for public use in some way, which is helpful in not violating copyright law
when using outside media in public projects (such as websites).

---Put it all Together

10.) Through this exercise, I have learned a lot about how search engines function. Knowing how web crawlers work will influence the choices I
make while designing my website, as I now know to use important and relevant words that people may be searching for in prominent spots on my page
so the crawler algorithm will note my site as a relevant match. I also learned through this that many search engines show lots of advertisements in the first
few search results, so I will be more conscious of scrolling past less relevant sponsored links to get to the actual matches.
